Autoinjector Supply Chain: Second Sources, Lead Times and Risk Planning

Published 2026-10-28 · Keywords: autoinjector supply chain

Device supply is the longest-lead, hardest-to-switch link in most drug supply chains: the mould is single-sourced by definition, assembly is batch-validated, and sterilization is scheduled. A procurement manager who treats the autoinjector supply chain like an API supply chain — switchable on notice — is planning for a supply chain that does not exist. Here is what to plan instead.

The four structural facts of device supply

Fact Consequence Planning response
Moulds are single-sourced The housing has one physical source Qualify a second source before you need it — see the second-source playbook
Assembly batches are validated Batch size floors and fixed qualification cost Know the MOQ logic; phase volumes across batches
Sterilization is scheduled Chamber slots are the hidden critical path Ask for the chamber slot date, not just the ship date
Containers are named Device forces are tuned to a supplier’s syringe Name the container supplier in every document

Risk planning that actually reduces risk

Dual documentation, not dual tooling. A second design file and verification set costs far less than a second mould and buys most of the option value. Batch phasing. Split annual volume across two purchase orders — one per half-year — so any single batch problem bounds the exposure. Named-container discipline. If your fill-finish partner changes syringe suppliers mid-program, the device compatibility must be re-verified — build that trigger into the quality agreement. Quotation validity discipline. Device quotations carry validity dates; a sourcing plan built on expired numbers is built on nothing.

The metrics a procurement manager should track

On-time-in-full per batch, of course — plus three device-specific ones: sterilization slot lead time trend, batch qualification pass rate, and the count of uncontrolled changes (any housing, spring or container change that arrived without re-verification). The third metric predicts the other two.

What this does not cover

Freight incoterms, duty optimization and warehousing are general supply-chain work. Clinical consequences of device switches belong to your regulatory team.
