Autoinjector OEM, ODM or CDMO: What Each Model Actually Means for Your Program
Published 2026-10-27 · Keywords: autoinjector OEM
OEM, ODM and CDMO describe who owns the design — and the difference is measured in years and tooling budgets, not in marketing labels. OEM means you buy an existing platform under your brand; ODM means the supplier adapts a platform you influence; CDMO-style co-development means a new device is designed around your drug. Most device programs need the first, underestimate the second, and cannot afford the third.
The three models compared
| Dimension | OEM (platform + brand) | ODM (platform + adaptation) | Co-development (new design) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design ownership | Supplier’s platform, your branding | Supplier platform, modified geometry/features | New IP, jointly agreed |
| One-time costs | Printing plate / colour setup only | Colour setup + housing tooling, quoted per design | Full development program |
| Time to samples | Quoted per platform, dated | Sample time + tooling time | Years, not months |
| IP position | Design-around rests with supplier platform | Shared by agreement | Defined in the development contract |
| Best for | Launch-speed programs, biosimilars | Differentiated housing, dose presentation | Novel presentation, no suitable platform |
Where buyers miscalculate
The common error is treating an OEM platform as if it were an ODM engagement — asking for housing geometry changes while expecting platform pricing and platform timelines. Geometry changes trigger moulds; moulds are one-time charges that do not repeat on reorders, but they are real and they reset the sample clock. The reverse error is paying co-development prices for what a colour-and-logo OEM program would deliver.
A useful test: if your requirement can be met by an existing platform with a printed or coloured housing, it is OEM. If it needs a different silhouette, activation position or container interface, it is ODM and the mould conversation comes first. If no platform accepts your container at all, you are in co-development and should scope it as such from day one.
How to verify which model a supplier is actually offering
Ask for the platform’s controlled specification sheet and the exact list of changes you are requesting. Everything on the “no tooling” list (logo, colour, packaging, labels) is OEM scope; everything on the “tooling” list is ODM scope, quoted as one-time. If a supplier quotes tooling for a logo change — or quotes OEM pricing for a geometry change — the commercial model and the engineering reality have come apart.
What this does not cover
Clinical strategy, drug-device combination registration and IP litigation positions are outside a device supplier’s lane. This article describes the supply-side commercial models only.
