Autoinjector Lead Time: What Actually Drives It, Stage by Stage
Published 2026-10-27 · Keywords: autoinjector lead time
Autoinjector lead time is not one number — it is a chain of five stages, and the longest stage is almost never production. For an existing platform it is tooling-free configuration and sterilization release that set the clock; for a modified housing it is the mould. Asking for “the lead time” without specifying which stage you are standing on gets you a best-case number you cannot plan a launch around.
The five-stage chain
| Stage | What happens | What drives its length |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Design freeze | Container format, dose configuration, housing finish agreed | How late your changes arrive — every post-freeze change restarts the chain |
| 2. Tooling (if any) | Moulds for modified housings; plates for printing | Geometry changes need a mould (weeks — quoted per design); printing needs only a plate |
| 3. Samples | Pre-production units for your evaluation | Sample batches wait in queue behind production on the same lines |
| 4. Production batch | Moulding, assembly, labeling at the agreed MOQ | Validated batch size (see MOQ) |
| 5. Sterilization + release | Ethylene oxide (or alternative) load, aeration, release testing | Chamber scheduling and minimum validated loads — the most commonly underestimated wait |
On an existing platform with no tooling, stages 1, 4 and 5 are the whole story. With a modified housing, stage 2 inserts itself ahead of everything and usually dominates.
Two questions that shorten real programs
“What is on the no-tooling list?” Colour, logo and packaging changes ride on existing moulds. Locking your geometry to a standard platform and taking your brand identity at the packaging level removes stage 2 entirely. “When does the sterilization chamber slot in?” Chamber time is booked, not conjured. A supplier who quotes production but not the chamber slot is quoting half a timeline.
UrgoPen-style emergency platforms are a special case: mature designs can offer off-the-shelf devices within weeks, because the tooling already exists and only filling, labeling and your documentation set remain.
How to verify a lead-time quote
Ask for the timeline as a dated sequence — design freeze date, sample ship date, production batch start, sterilization load date, release date — each with its dependency. Then change one input (“if we add a printed housing?”) and ask which dates move. A real plan moves two dates; a fabricated one moves none.
What this does not cover
Drug filling, your registration timeline and freight are outside the device clock. Customization charges that attach to stage 2 are on the customization costs page.
